Responding to New figures on stalking case processing times released today by the Department of Justice, Commissioner Designate for Victims of Crime Geraldine Hanna said:
“I have heard from victims about the impact stalking can have on them and the number of conviction cases of stalking and threatening or abusive behaviour that have gone through our courts show the importance of the Protection from Stalking Act (Northern Ireland) 2022.
"Hopefully the publication of statistics like this will bring attention to these crimes and give confidence to people that they will be believed and they can come forward if they become victims.
“There is no doubt that delay is a serious issue within our justice system. I know that tackling delay is a key priority of the Minister and the leaders of the criminal justice agencies.
“Statistics like this are important because they provide us with a way to measure the effectiveness of those efforts to tackle delay.
“Publication of statistics like this also play an important role in providing transparency, something which we need if victims are to feel any confidence in our justice system.”
